In the week that led to the “Super Sunday” showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 9 in New Orleans, students from the Sports Management Club made the most out of their chance to be directly involved with pre-game festivities.
Throughout the duration of their time in New Orleans, the LC group helped with various stations, including those set up at the Super Bowl Experience and NFL Fans First.
Junior Brandon Matson, who manned the field goal area, said it was a surreal experience for him to be in the same place as former high school teammate and current Philadelphia Eagles football player Jalen Carter.
“When we were in high school, he was a down-to-earth guy and a leader,” he said. “Getting to be part of the Super Bowl that he won was a full circle moment.”
Junior Wyatt Moore said he gained appreciation for those working in the event and hospitality aspects of the sports industry.
“I found it interesting to learn how much planning and teamwork that is necessary to put together an event of that size,” he said.
Senior Jaden Long, who assisted with operating games and taking photos of fans with NFL legends and the Vince Lombardi trophy, said he was also amazed at the amount of preparation that goes into developing a Super Bowl atmosphere for the fans.
“This experience taught me the importance of teamwork,” he said. “There is a lot of work happening that people do not see. I remember looking up and noticing people on top of the stadium doing scale work and holding on to a rope so that they did not fall off.”
Junior Kyle Moore said his favorite part was interacting with the participants.
“We were there to provide an unforgettable experience for NFL fans and create memories for families, whether it was through intentional conversation with fans or helping families take pictures to be able to share on social media or with loved ones,” he said. “I enjoyed listening to passionate football fans coming from all over the country to immerse themselves in everything that the Super Bowl has to offer.”
For senior Parker Lovett, the networking opportunities were beneficial.
“Our group learned so much throughout the week not only because of the experience we got, but also because of the people we got to connect with there,” he said. “We met a lot of individuals in the sports industry who have jobs a lot of us dream to acquire one day, so getting to work with them hands-on was a unique experience.”
One of the most interesting moments for Lovett was being on-site at Caesars Superdome at 5 a.m. on Super Bowl Sunday.
“We witnessed the chaos that occurs on gameday just hours before kickoff,” he said.
Associate Sports Management Professor Dr. Clay Bolton said these types of experiences help students build connections and gain real-world knowledge about the industry.
“Our group made lasting memories and were able to see what happens behind the scenes leading up to and on gameday at arguably the largest sporting event in the United States!” he said.

Men’s Basketball
The Panthers put forth one of their gutsiest efforts of the season this past weekend, taking one of the conference’s top teams in Piedmont to the limit, falling just short in a heartbreaking 81-80 loss. The team will close out the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 22 (tomorrow) against Covenant, who will visit Mariotti Gym for LC’s Senior Day game. Parker Lovett, Jay Muvumba and Tayshawn Pendleton will be honored prior to tipoff.
Women’s Basketball
LC took an 86-75 loss against Piedmont last weekend. On Tuesday, the Panthers picked up a big win over Wesleyan, beating the Wolves handily in a 74-48 final from Macon, Georgia. At their final road game of the regular season, the team earned a 81-79 win against Agnes Scott on Thursday. LC’s Senior Day game will be on Saturday, Feb. 22 (tomorrow) against Covenant, as Britney Chavez, Zyhia Johnson, Kendra Roberts and Amya Walker wear the red and black for the final time in regular season action.

LC opened the season this past weekend against Brevard, as the men and women both dropped their respective contests 6-1 and 7-0. They hit the courts again to host Johnson University on Friday, Feb. 21 (today) and Truett-McConnell on Saturday (tomorrow).
Beach Volleyball
The Panthers hosted their first home matches of the season this past weekend, taking on Truett-McConnell in a doubleheader as they unfortunately dropped both matches 5-0. They will travel to Huntingdon College this weekend to compete in the Huntingdon Tournament.
